Workforce in an office meeting

A little movie title fun this month... I digress...

I recently had the privilege of attending a local event focused on the future of the workforce. Various members of the business community shared key insights around skills anticipated to be in high demand over the next several years. Some insights shared were as follows:

The Workplace is Evolving…

This isn’t anything new. Why is the workforce changing? Several reasons including we now have five generations working together in the workforce, specifically Generation Z and late millennials. These groups grew up during the digital age, where much of their lives were shaped by technology.

The work environment has transformed. Companies have had to lean into using technology to streamline processes and operations. The pandemic has further accelerated trends like remote work and gig work, marking a definitive shift in how we perceive and engage in work.

Skills for the Future? Adaptability and Flexibility...

An eye-opening statistic revealed during the event indicated that over 75% of jobs by 2030 will require some form of education beyond high school, though not necessarily a traditional college degree.

This means that the need for companies will need to adapt a learning culture for their teams and employees. Employers discussed fostering pathways for employee upskilling and reskilling. This will aid to bridge the skill gap and enhance employee morale and retention.

Skills for the Future? Communication and Empathy...

Challenges for employers include a decline in communication skills within the emerging workforce. Instead of resisting the change, panelists agreed that there is a need to meet the emerging workforce where they are at. This may include integrating life skill education in addition to soft skills as part of organizational culture. This can nurture an environment that is empathetic and rich in communication.

Together is Better...

This presents challenges and opportunities. The future will require a proactive approach from both employers and employees. Employers will need to consider training and development strategies to foster an adaptable, skilled and empathetic workforce. At the same time, employees must be accountable for their growth and seek opportunities to learn.

Building a future of learning and adaptability will help build a better understanding of soft skills like empathy and communication. Let’s embrace this trend with a commitment to grow together.
