According to Gallup, a article on the workplace indicated that only 21% of employees trusted their leadership at an organization. What could happen if we increased that number by just 10%? What would happen if the American Public could increase trust in congressional members by just 10%?
High performance teams are critical to any organization, our Government included. As part of the governmental strategy planning, I would work to build a culture of:
Trust
Transparency
Collaboration
Emotional Intelligence
These are some initiatives I might consider:
Trust:
Trust is primary in building effective relationships. The ability to build trust starts at the top and must be modeled throughout the organization. Behaviors that erode trust, should not be tolerated.

Trust needs to be rebuilt both internally and externally. The congressional team needs to define in their context what trust means and share how trust impacts team dynamics and decision making. Before working to rebuild trust, it would be essential to conduct an assessment to benchmark the team's perceptions of trust.
To rebuild trust, the congressional team must:
Accept: Accept personal responsibility and acknowledge that lack of trust exists.
Apologize: Offer a sincere apology.
Act: In my opinion, the most important; take action to deal with the immediate consequences of a mistake.
Amend: A leader’s error can cause undue hardship to others. The amends should be problem specific.
Attend: Leaders need to make sure that they are aware of the influence their actions have and work to restore trust.
Collaboration:
This is one if my favorite videos that discusses collaboration and respect. I think adults can learn a lot from Sesame Street.
Collaboration is respect. Collaboration across party lines must be promoted, bickering will not be tolerated. It is important to build a Community of Practice - simply defined as a group of people working together towards a common goal.
Consistent consulting and feedback among congressional teams will help to uphold principles of the strategy and the culture set forth by the Government.
Transparency:
Transparency does not mean full disclosure. It means open communication about process and nuances involving the team. As the congressional team represents a vast demographic, it is important to make policy clear and easy to understand. This would entail the formation of committees consisting of the general public to guarantee that policy is clear and comprehensible.
Emotional Intelligence (EQ):
EQ is the ability to be self aware and to self regulate your emotions; along with the ability to care about others; these are things that I feel our congressional teams are lacking.
Self Awareness is the ability to reflect on your own values and to recognize when you may need to lean on your team. More congressional members need to learn to regulate their emotions and to maintain their focus on the strategy, rather than personal feelings.
A heavy lift indeed, but necessary to rebuild trust and obtain buy-in among the American People.
