In the spirit of strategy planning with the US Government, fundamental changes that I feel would foster progress with our government would be succession planning and diversity initiatives.
Succession Planning:
Imagine a government with fresh perspectives, while maintaining the foundations of institutional knowledge. This aiming to build on growth, inclusion and agility, not recycling the same leadership models.
Succession planning is about fostering the development of future leaders. This encompasses preparing for the transfer of management to the emerging generation.
The restructuring of internship programs, and fostering mentorship within Congress could help to grow and professionally develop future leaders.
Setting Term Limits:
In reviewing research for this blog, the Founding Father’s dismissed the idea of term limits in favor if associating longevity with expertise. Most people also only lived into their 40’s at this time. 🤷🏻♀️
Our current landscape is different. Experienced figureheads should take pride in retirement and sharing institutional knowledge with the future rather than clinging to power. We are trapped in a cycle of regurgitated leadership without the cultivating new potential. Perhaps instituting limits of 10-12 years would help ideas evolve and let progress take its course.
Embracing More Diversity:
For the first time, we have more diversity in our congressional representation than ever before. Generation Z has a voice in our national legislature. 1/4 of Congress is comprised of non-white individuals. Despite this, we have a long way to go. We have a gap between what our congressional members think the people need versus what they actually need. Lawmakers should mirror the people they serve, not only ethically, but socioeconomically as well.
This would entail forming committees with greater diversity or engaging in public consultations to enhance transparency.
All of these strategic initiatives help to adopt broader perspectives where we enrich leadership in the organization (US Government) and embrace many viewpoints and perspectives.
I welcome your thoughts and engagement! Let's build a blueprint for a better tomorrow, starting today.
